Sheriff’s deputies, LA County Fire Department and others respond to the incident.

A July 3 incident involving a car going off the side of Malibu Canyon Road resulted in the death of 66-year-old Jayne Fleming.

According to LA County Medical Examiner-Coroner case detail, the death was ruled a suicide; Fleming died from “multiple traumatic injuries.”

An informant called the incident in at 6:56 p.m., according to Lt. Garcia of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. Deputies and LA County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. A helicopter was also deployed to assist.

In a phone call with The Malibu Times, California Highway Patrol officer Weston Haver said the victim was driving a blue 2015 Toyota Camry westbound on Malibu Canyon Road at approximately 45 miles per hour.

A witness observed that the Toyota moved “from the No. 1 lane to the asphalt turnout lane,” where the car accelerated to speeds of 70 mph.

The car then crashed into a dirt embankment.

“[The] Toyota went airborne [and] traveled over the side of Malibu Canyon Road, coming to a rest approximately 300 feet down the embankment,” Haver said.

Fleming was pronounced dead at the scene, at 7:39 p.m., after succumbing to fatal injuries.

An alert from the City of Malibu stated that only one lane was open on Malibu Canyon Road, from Civic Center Way to Piuma Road, with deputies to direct traffic, until hours later.

Haver said that there is an ongoing investigation into the incident.
