This letter is addressed to the friends of Scott Winner. You may have read many of his impassioned letters to the editor in this very spot. Some of you know him from these letters about the steelhead trout, the water quality and other issues he considered essential to the life and survival of Malibu. Some of you know him from his skills as a craftsman, carpenter and are lucky enough to live in the homes that he so lovingly restored and repaired. Some of you played with Scott in the oceans and streams of Malibu, enjoying with him his love of fishing and kayaking.
Scotty was raised in Malibu and considered himself lucky to also work, marry and raise his two kids, Daisy and Jackson, here. Jackson is now at Malibu High and Daisy in her first year of college in Boston.
It's sad to now share a letter about Scotty and his current condition, but we thought many of you would want to know that Scotty had a stroke two weeks ago and is on life support.
The prognosis is not good. The damage done is pervasive. His friends and family surround him as he fights this battle.
His family wants you to know about his love for his hometown, how he played on these beaches as a boy, went to school here, surfed, kayaked and fished with his friends here. How he married and raised his children here and instilled in them how important it is to appreciate and protect our Malibu. He also always knew it is the people here, his neighbors, that make Malibu. He is proud to be from this town. Malibu helped shape him into the man that is Scott Winner.
They ask that you keep Scotty in your thoughts and prayers for a peaceful path. We hope to give you better news next week.
