This is KBUU News - day 236 - the Wednesday Headlines:

  • =  Power costs in Malibu are exactly the same for both Edison and the new clena power company.
  • =  But our Edison electric service reliability?  Third world… and that was before the fire.
  • = Another casualty emerges from the Woolsey Fire … it’s a grove of 50 healthy oak trees.
  • =  The homeless parking lot in San Clemente is a failure … so says the homeless people.
  • =  And Tyler Skaggs … that major league pitcher found dead … was a regular in Malibu.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news. It’s the Wednesday edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

Big breakers are expected again today.

Surf of 3 to 6 feet … with local sets to 7 feet are possible.

And there will be a very high tide tonight … also near 7 feet … at 10:15.

Many Malibu people are upset that their power bills have gone up … since their electric generation source was switched by the City of malibu away from Southern California Edison. A new provider … called the Clean Power Alliance … is now supplying the electricity that is delivered by Southern California Edison to your house or business. New data published by the two companies show that Edison and Clean Power Alliance rates have both gone up. And the alliance is a bit cheaper. ttps://

While Malibu has a choice on who generates their power … Southern California Edison has the monopoly on delivering it.  And their reliability record is terrible . malub gets more than twice as many power blackouts … and that is NOT including the Woolsey Fire.  Details:

A grove of oak trees … healthy trees … that has to be cut down or transplanted. Caltrans says that an oak-grove next to the 101 Freeway … just west of Kanan Road … has to go. Details:

Malibu residents seeking a solution to the problem of homeless people in R V s parked along the highway have been pointing to San Clemente as a possible solution. But yesterday … attorneys representing homeless people asked a federal judge to shut down the month-old experiment.

You are listening to the latest news from Radio Malibu … F-M 99 point 1 K B U U.  ((( time  ))))

Money aimed at maintenance projects in national parks … including the Santa Monica Mountains National recreation area … is being diverted to pay for president trumps Fourth of July military parade in Washington.

The Washington Post reports that entrance and recreation fees primarily intended to improve parks across the country are being diverted to the military parade in D-C.

Trump administration officials have consistently refused to say how much taxpayers will have to pay for the expanded celebration on the Mall this year, which the president has dubbed the “Salute to America.”

At east 2 point 5 million dollars are being transferred by the National Park Service away form maintenance projects across the nation.

The diverted park fees represent just a fraction of the extra costs the government faces as a result of the event, which will include displays of military hardware, flyovers by an array of jets including Air Force One, the deployment of tanks on the Mall and an extended pyrotechnics show.

The story was reported by the Washington Post.

Major league baseball stopped for one minute last night … before each game across the continent … to honor Tyler Skaggs.

The Los Angeles Angels pitcher … 27 years old … was found dead in a hotel room in Texas Sunday.

He is a Malibu story.

Tyler Skaggs was a Los Angeles native … he attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School and was a 2009 graduate of Samohi.

His his mother … Debbie …  a longtime and widely respected softball coach — and married this past New Year’s Eve at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu.

Tyler Skaggs played in that celebrity softball game last winter … the one that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for fire victims in Malibu and over the hill.

Yahoo Sports reports that Skaggs did his winter practice … throwing pitches … at Pepperdine.

Skaggs and his wife, the former Carli Miles, lived in Santa Monica.

The L-A Angels hung Skaggs’s No. 45 jersey in their dugout last night at the stadium near Dallas.

The Rangers’ grounds crew painted a large, red “45” into the back of the pitcher’s mound. Rangers hitters came to the plate without their typical “walk-up” music on the public address system — instead conducting their own individual moments of silence.

No cause of death.

No funeral services.

Baseball is on the All Star break … with the Angels once again confronting the death of a player …
