[Updated, 4 p.m.] At least two people were rushed to a local trauma center for treatment following a major car crash on Pacific Coast Highway, forcing police to shut down a section of the heavily-traveled highway Thursday afternoon for roughly three hours.

Drivers experienced significant delays on PCH, Interstate 10 and in Downtown Santa Monica as investigators worked the scene of the crash, police said.

All I-10 traffic heading westbound was diverted to the exit at Fourth and Fifth streets in Santa Monica, all northbound lanes of PCH were closed, and one southbound lane was closed from roughly 12:20 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The accident took place around noon along the 200 block of PCH and involved several vehicles, police said. One vehicle was leaving a private beach club on PCH when it was struck by a car traveling south.

One person was listed in critical condition while another had moderate injuries. No drugs or alcohol are suspected at this time, police said.

How about right turn only out of those beachside parking lots. I know the club mentioned and it is insane to try cross three lanes of heavy traffic and time it so there is a gap in the southbound lane. Crashes happen a lot there.
